In July 2012, the government of Sweden made a resolute commitment to advancing family planning at the London Summit on Family Planning.
With a focus on promoting the rights and health of women and girls in vulnerable African countries, Sweden has positioned itself as a key player in the field. The commitment encompasses policy, political, and financial aspects, with a vision to create lasting change and contribute to the broader global development agenda.

VisionIn 2012, Sweden made its first family planning commitment by pledging to spend US$40 million per year on contraceptives and increase its annual contribution of US$450 million to MDGs 4 and 5. In 2017, the government of Sweden revitalized its family planning commitment, increasing its global sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) support by an additional US$24 million.
Sweden Commitment Objectives
- Improve the health and rights of women and girls, particularly in vulnerable African countries.
- Support family planning through existing structures for financing and support.
- Contribute to the broader agenda of achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5.
- Increase spending on contraceptives from $32 million per year (2010 level) to $40 million per year.
- Allocate an additional $40 million between 2011 and 2015 for contraceptive support.
- Increase the government’s overall contribution to MDGs 4 and 5 from the current amount of $450 million per year.
- Empower women with the ability to make informed decisions regarding their reproductive health.
- Ensure access to high-quality contraceptives and reproductive healthcare services.
- Strengthen the availability and accessibility of contraceptives.
- Procure and distribute contraceptives to meet the demand and provide reproductive healthcare.
- Contribute to the reduction of child mortality rates (MDG 4).
