COVID-19 & Family Planning

Emergency Preparedness & Response

Dear colleagues:

The FP2030 Support Network was happy to gather together last week to welcome Executive Director Samu Dube to the North American & Europe Hub for the first time since she joined the partnership in December. Her visit has provided opportunity for us to have important discussions about the next phase of our transition to the expanded global support network for our FP2030 partnership – and of course, to discuss what we want to look like as a multinational, intentional, inclusive team.

It also provided an opportunity for Samu to personally meet the strong partners we have in the Washington, DC area. We celebrated her visit with our first in-person reception in over two years. It was a pleasure to be able to see so many old friends at once!

In this month’s update, we hear from health leaders working to break down the barriers that keep women and adolescents in island nations – Haiti and the Solomon Islands – from using family planning. Haiti has been buffeted by natural disasters, epidemics, and political crises; one midwife talks about her efforts to help young people see family planning as key to weathering these storms. And we are pleased to learn about how the Solomon Islands is also making progress on their family planning goals despite persistent challenges.

We love sharing these stories of how family planning can transform individuals, communities, and countries – you can read more in the resources below!

All the best,

Kirsten Sherk
Director of Communications, FP2030

Family Planning in Compounding Crises: How One Provider is Working With Young People in Haiti

Haiti has withstood several serious earthquakes, a cholera outbreak, and the country continues to weather the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These compounding crises have made it exceptionally difficult for people to access family planning - and particularly difficult for young people. Here's how Jennyfer Isemai, a young midwife in Haiti, is breaking down silos to make sure young people have the information they need to make informed decisions. Read more.

In Her Own Words: An Interview with Nancy Pego, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, RMNCAH Programme Manager, Solomon Islands

Nancy Pego oversees six national health programs for the Solomon Islands, with a focus on family planning and sexual and reproductive health. How has the country faced the COVID-19 pandemic, funding gaps, and difficult-to-reach remote or rural populations? Learn more.

An estimated 32 million women and girls of reproductive age are living in emergency settings. Within this context, delivering accessible, quality, and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health is increasingly complex, and requires more creative and improved interventions. Elrha recently commissioned a report to better understand how the SRH community understands innovation, and maps innovative interventions against SRH research gaps and needs.
