Dear colleagues:

The FP2030 Support Network was happy to gather together last week to welcome Executive Director Samu Dube to the North American & Europe Hub for the first time since she joined the partnership in December. Her visit has provided opportunity for us to have important discussions about the next phase of our transition to the expanded global support network for our FP2030 partnership – and of course, to discuss what we want to look like as a multinational, intentional, inclusive team.

It also provided an opportunity for Samu to personally meet the strong partners we have in the Washington, DC area. We celebrated her visit with our first in-person reception in over two years. It was a pleasure to be able to see so many old friends at once!

In this month’s update, we hear from health leaders working to break down the barriers that keep women and adolescents in island nations – Haiti and the Solomon Islands – from using family planning. Haiti has been buffeted by natural disasters, epidemics, and political crises; one midwife talks about her efforts to help young people see family planning as key to weathering these storms. And we are pleased to learn about how the Solomon Islands is also making progress on their family planning goals despite persistent challenges.

Special Edition: Track20 Data Updates

• Country indicator briefs are now available in Spanish, in addition to French and English.
• Track20’s SS to EMU tool, used by Monitoring and Evaluation officers to convert service statistics into Estimated Modern Use (EMU) for routine monitoring and as an input for the Family Planning Estimation Tool (FPET), now has preloaded data on population estimates and survey results (for mCP, method mix, method source, and more) for more than 80 countries.
• The latest version of Track20’s MaxCPR Model, which estimates a country’s highest potential contraceptive prevalence, both in terms of use for spacing and for limiting, based on an ideal number of children and key demographic life events, is now pre-populated with information from 72 countries’ Demographic and Health Surveys.
• Track20’s tool to estimate the potential market for subcutaneous injectables (DMPA-SC) has been updated to include default data for all low and lower-middle income countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new recommendations on maternal and newborn care for a positive postnatal experience, which includes a recommendation for postpartum family planning counseling.

A recent survey in Kenya has revealed that contraceptive uptake among unmarried women and sexually active adolescents has gone up to 64 percent.

The United States Government through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched a new, five-year $29 million partnership with the Ghana Health Service to support the widespread adoption of life-saving health behaviors across Ghana.

An estimated 32 million women and girls of reproductive age are living in emergency settings. Within this context, delivering accessible, quality, and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health is increasingly complex, and requires more creative and improved interventions. Elrha recently commissioned a report to better understand how the SRH community understands innovation, and maps innovative interventions against SRH research gaps and needs.
