Working towards global reproductive choice; autonomy and empowerment; and gender equality

At the London Summit in 2012, the family planning community committed to enabling 120 million additional women and girls to use contraceptives by 2020, creating the FP2020 global partnership.
The ‘additional users’ indicator is the first in a suite of 18 FP2020 Core Indicators. It serves as one of FP2030‘s foundational measures of progress and is reported annually for FP2030’s 69 focus countries.

How FP2030 Supports
Understanding ‘Additional Users’
1
Webinar
FP2030 organized a webinar. The first part of the webinar focused on clarifying the meaning of “additional users” and comprehensively explaining the underlying dynamics of contraceptive use. With the second part of this webinar, we aimed to improve understanding among stakeholders and align measurement efforts.
2
Infographic
Along with the webinar, we created an infographic to visually explain the idea of “additional users” and its connection to other family planning measures. This infographic is a helpful tool for sharing information clearly and succinctly with various audiences.

Statement by PME WG
The PME WG for FP2030 Performance Monitoring & Evidence Working Group issued a statement acknowledging the confusion surrounding the metric “additional users.” PME WG intends to encourage discussions and actions that align better with measurements and improve understanding of progress towards FP2020’s global goal.

Research Publication
FP2030 played a crucial role in supporting the publication of a paper in the Global Health: Science and Practice journal in March 2017. This paper delves into the challenges and misconceptions surrounding the “additional users” metric and provides valuable insights to assist stakeholders in comprehending and interpreting the metric in the context of family planning initiatives.
