South Korea demonstrates its commitment to promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and improved healthcare access for vulnerable populations worldwide.
Through increased financial support and policy emphasis, the government aimed to make a tangible impact on the lives of millions of women and girls by enabling them to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and access essential healthcare services.

In 2012, the government of South Korea made a commitment to contribute to the Family Planning 2020 goal to enable 120 million more women and girls in the world’s poorest countries to use modern contraception by 2020. This commitment more than doubled South Korea’s annual support for maternal and child health, including family planning, from US$5.4 million in 2010 to at least US$10.8 million in 2013.

South Korea Commitment Objectives
- Prioritize maternal and child health, including family planning, in South Korea’s official development assistance (ODA) policy.
- Double the support for maternal and child health, including family planning, from $5.4 million in 2010 to at least $10.8 million per year starting in 2013.
- Expand the overall ODA program from 0.12% of South Korea’s Gross National Income (GNI) in 2010 to 0.25% by 2015.
