In Guatemala, the Law of Universal and Equitable Access to Family Planning Services and its Integration into the National Reproductive Health Program establishes in Article 10, titled “Comprehensive Training for Adolescents,” that the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance, in coordination with the Ministry of Education and other public and private organizations, must include in the curriculum content on rights and responsibilities for the promotion and self-care of health, sexuality, and prevention of early unintended pregnancy. It is important to note that in October 2022, various civil society organizations and collectives presented Bill 6157 to Congress, focused on implementing CSE (Comprehensive Sexuality Education). Currently, there is the Youth Assembly, made up of ten organizations promoting CSE, with Oxlajuj N’oj as part of the assembly, led by INCIDEJOVEN. This Youth Assembly is committed to continuing advocacy and lobbying for the bill to be passed by Congress. Oxlajuj N’oj is committed to supporting these initiatives to make it law, informing on the bill’s process, actions taken, and participating in discussion forums.

In response to these risk factors contributing to maternal-infant mortality, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections, since 2020, we have been working on virtual schools for CSE, workshops, webinars, and discussion forums, benefiting over 2,000 young people, teachers, and parents over the last four years. In January 2024, Oxlajuj N’oj began its Family Planning program in partnership with Alas de Guatemala, which operates throughout the national territory. In the eastern part of the country, this collaboration has benefited 100 women.

In this proposal, “Youth for CSE and Women for Family Planning,” from August 2024 to January 2025, we expect to benefit 600 people through five key activities:

  • Activities 1 and 2: Workshops in educational centers are designed to reinforce, promote, and align with Article 10 of the law, ensuring comprehensive and equitable training in sexual and reproductive health. We aim to strengthen learning about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in adolescents aged 13 to 16 through educational workshops in public schools in five vulnerable departments of Guatemala. Additionally, we will distribute kits including condoms, menstrual cups, and eco-friendly sanitary pads among youth and adolescents to promote safe and healthy practices regarding sexuality and personal hygiene.
  • Activity 3: Increase access to contraceptive methods and family planning services for 100 vulnerable and migrant women through health clinics in collaboration with five local governments and community organizations in five of the most vulnerable departments with high rates of pregnancies among girls and adolescents.
  • Activity 4: Promote Comprehensive Sexuality Education through two virtual schools aimed at adolescents aged 13 to 18, parents, and teachers nationwide in Guatemala, offering continuous and accessible education on SRHR topics.
  • Activity 5: Create five discussion spaces in prioritized territories to talk about SRHR and Healthy Masculinities, promoting good practices around family planning and sexual rights. Additionally, we will disseminate an SRHR and Family Planning campaign via social media and invite key stakeholders to the discussion forums.

“I Decide” is a project integrating Comprehensive Sexuality Education funded by the Girls First Fund with a one-year duration. The primary objective is to empower girls aged 13 to 17 to make decisions for themselves, impacting 125 girls across five departments over one year.

Oxlajuj N’oj is committed to continuing the development of Comprehensive Sexuality Education Schools through its Youth for Comprehensive Sexuality Education Call to replicate workshops in vulnerable communities.
