Advance Family Planning

The Advance Family Planning (AFP) initiative is comprised of multiple partner organizations worldwide working to achieve the global goal of expanding access to quality contraceptive information, services, and supplies.

AFP provides decision-makers with evidence that family planning is a sound investment for individuals, communities, and a nation’s future, and is a fundamental part of universal health coverage and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Advance Family Planning is an advocacy initiative aimed at expanding access to quality contraceptive services, information, and supplies worldwide. In 2012, Advance Family Planning committed to persuading policy-makers to honor their London Summit on Family Planning 2020 commitments and, in general, seek increased political commitment and funding from public and private sources for family planning at the global, regional, country, and local levels.

Advance Family Planning Commitment Narratives

  • Improve the policy environment for family planning, with a specific focus on youth, post-partum family planning, and quality of care.
  • Advocate for new policies and implementation of existing policies to enhance access to quality family planning services, a wider range of contraceptive methods, and increased availability of health workers.
  • Strengthen accountability mechanisms and revise family planning curricula and training.
  • Expand AFP’s presence and influence at subnational levels to reach a larger population of women of reproductive age.
  • Enhance the capacity of local and international NGOs to effectively advocate for family planning using the AFP SMART approach.
  • Foster a community of practice and provide training for advocacy strategy development and implementation.
  • Ensure that countries assume greater ownership of the family planning agenda to meet FP2020 and broader health and development goals.
  • Advocate for specific budget allocations and directives to provide youth-friendly health services, including family planning.
  • Increase funding and resources for adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health.
  • Support the participation of young people in the development and implementation of family planning initiatives and policies.
  • Reduce teenage pregnancy rates through targeted strategies and action plans.
  • Promote the integration of sexual and reproductive health modules into school curricula.
  • Implement youth-friendly services in health facilities and ensure quality and confidential sexual and reproductive health care for young people.
  • Utilize social monitoring tools and engage youth health promoters to improve service delivery and accountability.
