The South-South Learning Workshop on Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy and Advancing Gender Transformative Actions, co-hosted by Ministry of Health and Population, Government of Nepal and FP2030 Asia Pacific Hub, was held from December 2-4, 2024, in Kathmandu, Nepal. The aim of the workshop was to address the urgent challenge of adolescent pregnancy in the Asia-Pacific region via collaborative regional action. This workshop built on the foundation of the 2024 South Asia Regional Dialogue on Adolescent Pregnancy organized by South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO) and partners. With over 3.9 million adolescent pregnancies annually—43% of which are unintended—the region remains one of the highest globally in adolescent fertility rates. South Asia alone is home to over 170 million adolescent girls, representing 26.6% of the world’s adolescent girls, with 26 out of every 1,000-giving birth during adolescence. Adolescent pregnancy is deeply rooted in gender and social norms and disparities that limit girls’ educational opportunities, reproductive autonomy, and decision-making. These challenges are compounded by factors such as coerced sex, child marriage, and restrictive attitudes toward contraception and reproductive health. Cultural and societal barriers, alongside inadequate access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information and services, further exacerbate.
