Burundi has taken steps to increase access to family planning services, such as improving the availability of contraceptives in health facilities and training healthcare providers to offer family planning services.
Burundi’s commitment to FP2030 includes increasing the modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) among married women from 21% in 2010 to 60% by 2030. The government has implemented policies to increase awareness and demand for family planning services, such as national media campaigns and community-based education programs.

Vision
By 2030, Burundi will be a country where the population has access to quality, affordable, acceptable, and equitable family planning and reproductive health services with the full participation of the community and all stakeholders.
Burundi Commitment Objectives
- Strengthen the political and legislative environment to make it more favorable to rights-based family planning through the development of a national population policy by 2025.
- From 2023 to 2030, increase each year by at least 10% of the Government’s annual budget allocation relating to the purchase contraceptive products.
- By 2030, increase from 18% to 30% the contraceptive prevalence of all methods among all women of childbearing age.
- By 2030, ensure the availability and accessibility of quality sexual and reproductive health information, services and care, adapted to the needs of adolescents and young people in health centers and at community level
taking into account the Burundian context (from 38 to 80% of health centers). - By 2030, engage in dialogues with all stakeholders to promote positive socio-cultural norms in favor of Family Planning (FP).
